I was playing around with Processing and came up with this simple simulation of ink falling into a maze. The source code is also available. I'm hoping to work on my design skills this year. If you have any suggestions, let me know.

One idea: Could you add the idea of "air pockets" that get stuck in the upside-down-U-shaped areas (e.g.) of the maze?
Or, could you let the user control where the ink comes from? Possibly dynamically sourcing it from the mouse's x coordinate? That would make it interactive and really show-offy. :)

Couple more ideas:
1. Consistency of flow. Right now, a one-square-wide column fills up at the same vertical-velocity rate as an eight-square-wide clearing. Establish a squares-per-second rate for the flow of incoming ink (I'm imagining a slider with 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, and 4 to let the user control it), and then stick to it. The one-square-wide column would fill up quickly, and the wide area would fill up slowly.
2. When I first looked at it, I didn't even notice that there was an initial downward flow of ink; I thought you were just filling it up from a point source at the bottom (admittedly, that was also due to a coincidence in the shape of the first maze I saw). So, related to #1, take the incoming flow rate and use that to animate the downward flow just as the upward filling is animated. Rather than have a downward stream of ink instantaneously hit the bottom of its column, establish a gravitational constant and have it fall realistically.
3. Related to #2, when the ink flows off of a ledge or overflows out of a full 'vat', it would have some horizontal momentum. The visual appeal of the simulation could be greatly enhanced, IMHO, with a simple two-frame 'overflow' animation at each of these points, where just a couple of tiny, alternating pixmaps illustrate a small 'splash' shape.

OK, I played around with this a bit tonight. It was pretty fun, and I finished my first two ideas.
They were both pretty easy. The interactivity aspect was a convenient way to get familiar with your code.
The air bubbles weren't that bad, either. You can precalculate them and store them in an array with a pretty simple algorithm, and then just add !bubble[x][y] checks to the upward spill code.

I hope the code wasn't too hard to read. I had it mostly written and then threw it out and wrote what you saw.
Splitting the flow shouldn't be too difficult. The only condition that worried me was if a non-full cell receives more liquid than it can hold. It would have to redistribute. But that's probably not too bad.
To have the ink fall slower, I think I'd have to somehow save the state of my recursive function calls, which seems nasty. Is there an easier way?
